Imagine all of this happening in Russian
(and my best conversations have been 5 minute long ones with kids)…
I walk 20 minutes to the Post Office.
“Do you have big envelopes?” -me
“Go to the window down there…” -lady at window number 7
“Window number 1?” -me
“Yes.” -lady at window number 7
“Hello (lady at window number one). Do you have a big envelope?” -me
“No.” -lady at window number 1 (let’s call her Kamshat, a popular Kazakh name for girls)
“Maybe a box?” -me
“No.” -Kamshat
“Is this the post office?” -me
“Yes.” -Kamshat
“And you haven’t got ANY envelopes or boxes?!” -me
“Oh, do you want this?”-lady at window number 2 (shows me a big envelope, let’s call her Asel)
“YES (utter joy and amazement)!!!!!!” -me
….I walk 2 steps to window number 2 and shove all of the Flat Stanleys into the large envelope…
“I’d like to mail these to America. Is this the right address? And is this the right return address?” -me
“Yes, everything is correct.” -Asel (I really start to like Asel, she’s nice)
“OK, but these two are NOT going to America. One is going to Great Britain and one is going to Panama.” -me
…Asel looks up Panama… 5 minutes later… still looking… gives up and looks for Great Britain… finds the postal code/translation for Great Britain and I write it in Russian on the envelope.
“Great! And what about the one going to Panama?” -me
“Panama? Is that a state?” -Kamshat (woman from window number 1)
“Nope. It’s a country. It is in Central America.” -me
“You mean Canada?” -Kamshat
“Nope. Panama.” -me
“Argentina?” Kamshat
“Nope. Panama.” -me (I’m also illustrating the other countries she is mentioning… she also wanted to send it to Mexico… ???? what?)
…Asel and Kamshat look through the computer to find this elusive country they don’t believe in… and sure enough! BAM! Panama. Anyway… Asel weighs the packages and puts stamps on them… we also glue them shut… and viola!
It’s finished and 41 Flat Stanleys have been mailed!
The end.
Well done, Corinne, well done.
